Unpacking The Eno

The Eno River Watershed begins in Hillsborough in Orange County, North Carolina and continues through Oak Grove in Durham County. Some of the land surrounding The Eno river is protected by federal and state parks, but much of the land use its vicinity is commercial, industrial, and suburban (Durhamnc.gov).

Water from the Eno river enters Falls Lake. From there, it flows into the Neuse River and on to the Pamlico Sound prior to emptying into the Atlantic Ocean. It is part of the Upper Neuse Sub-Basin of the Neuse River (Durhamnc.gov).

The Town of Chapel Hill has the largest population in Orange County with 59,635 residents (google 2013), and the City of Durham has the largest population in Durham County with 245,475 residents (google 2013).

In state scoring rubrics, the Eno River last received the grade A in 2014. The Eno River watershed, however, experiences “high fecal coliform levels,” although the state has not classified the watershed as injurious to humans or animals
